The Pathology and Laboratory Medicine Residency Program at the University of Wisconsin, Madison, offers training in Anatomic Pathology & Clinical Pathology (AP/CP) or AP only training.

Application Process

US Graduates

1. Applicants must apply by October 15th through the Electronic Residency Application Service (ERAS). Application materials should include/fulfill the following requirements:

  • 3 letters of recommendation
  • MSPE (Dean's letter)
  • Official transcript
  • USMLE or COMLEX scores: A minimum passing score of 200 is required on Step 1 (first or second attempt only). Step 2 & 3 scores are not required for application, however, successful completion of Step 2 (CK & CS) is required before the start of residency.
  • Not more than 10 years from receipt of M.D./D.O. degree

2. Interviews will be granted on the basis of academic achievement, and evaluation of personal statement and letters of recommendation.

International Medical Graduates (IMG's)

3. Applicants must complete an application form and provide appropriate documentation via ERAS:

  • Official transcript
  • A copy of current and valid ECFMG certificate
  • 3 letters of recommendation
  • Dean’s letter (MSPE)
  • Official Medical School transcript
  • USMLE score(s): a minimum passing score of 200 is required on Step I and II, (including Step II CS) on first or second attempt
  • Permanent U.S. Resident or J-1 clinical visa only
  • Not more than 10 years from medical school, unless under mitigating circumstances
  • Preference is given to those with US clinical experience

1. Interviews will be granted on the basis of academic achievement and evaluation of personal statement and letters of recommendation.

2. Additional consideration will be given to graduates who have successfully completed an advanced degree other than the M.D. or its equivalent, who are currently in an ACGME accredited residency training program, or who have additional research experience.

 

Interview and Selection Process

1. Interviews will be conducted from October 15th through January 15th. Whenever possible, applicants will meet with members of the Graduate Medical Education (GME) Committee and the current chief resident.

2. The Program Coordinator will be responsible for maintaining the application files and for scheduling the interviews. Each interviewer, including the chief resident or designee, will be provided with the application packet prior to the interview. Following the interview, an evaluation form including a rank score will be completed and returned to the Program Coordinator. The rank scores are collated and averaged.

3. The GME Committee and any additional faculty members who were involved in the interview process will meet in January to determine a rank list. This listing will be based, in part, on the averaged rank score, and consideration of other factors. The rank list will be entered into the National Resident Match Program (NRMP) database. Rules governing the NRMP are strictly adhered to.
