Activities

The fellow actively participates in frozen section diagnosis, grossing room supervision and surgical pathology sign-out. Several departmental and inter-departmental conferences afford an opportunity for interaction with our clinical colleagues. Opportunities also exist for resident and medical student teaching. A flexible schedule can be arranged for subspecialty electives in gastrointestinal/liver, genito-urinary, gynecologic, transplantation and renal pathology. The fellow may progress towards a more independent case sign-out during the program.

Institution

The University of Wisconsin Hospital and Clinics is a leading academic tertiary care medical center with an NCI-designated comprehensive cancer center. The organ transplantation and oncology programs are among the strongest in the nation [ http://www.surgery.wisc.edu/transplant/news/ranking.shtml]. The quality of these clinical programs is matched by our Surgical pathology unit, which provides state-of-the-art service. Approximately 23,000 cases are examined annually, many of which are challenging and complex specimens. Full-service immunohistochemistry and molecular cytogenetics laboratories support the surgical pathology activities.

Academics and Research

The University of Wisconsin is one of the world’s leading research universities. There is ample opportunity for intra and inter-departmental research collaborations. The TRIP pathology core lab [http://www.pathology.wisc.edu/TRIP/] provides instrumentation, technical staffing and funding for research projects involving advanced pathology techniques such as tissue microarrays, laser microdissection and quantitative real-time PCR. The presentation of research findings at national meetings and publications in peer-reviewed journals are strongly encouraged. An optional second year devoted to research may be available to interested fellows.
