Advisory Committee

An Advisory Committee of five or more tenure-track or tenured faculty members will supervise the training of each graduate student. Major professors will help students in choosing the additional Advisory Committee members. At least three members of the Committee should be members of the CMP Program (including the major professor).

A. Composition of Advisory Committees:

1. Major Professor

2. 2-3 tenure-track or tenured faculty members in the CMP program

3. 1-2 UW tenure-track or tenured faculty member, non CMP trainer

*The committee members must be chosen by March 31 of the student’s first year and the student must submit a list of their committee members to the department office in order to be able to register for research during the summer semester. Students will meet with their Advisory Committees once each semester before they become a dissertator (during the first four academic semesters) and once each year after becoming a dissertator to review progress.

B. Roles of the committee

The committee is designed to help the student:

1. Determine the coursework they should complete for their area of research specialty

2. Provide guidance to the student throughout their Ph.D. studies.

3. Evaluate the student’s Preliminary exams and thesis defense.
