Radiation Safety

There are several campus-wide committees which provide information on and guidelines for handling radioactive materials, chemical carcinogens, and biological hazards. The Biological Safety Committee, the General Safety Committee, and the Radiation Safety Department print leaflets and handbooks which are available from them directly and from most departmental offices. You are encouraged to familiarize yourself with this material as soon as possible since all labs contain some of these hazardous materials. It is required by law that anyone working in a lab using radioactive isotopes pass a radiation safety exam. This exam is administered on campus by the Radiation Safety Department. You must attend a radiation safety workshop as soon as possible in the beginning of the Fall semester. Workshops are held in 1B Biochemistry once a week in the beginning of the semester (consult the Radiation Safety Office). The workshop will last 4 hours and will include a lecture, a demonstration, and a multiple choice open book exam. Students need to score 70% or better to pass and are then eligible to apply for a radiation badge/ring. Those using isotopes MUST obtain Film badges/rings from Radiation Safety. These badges/rings are regularly monitored by them to determine the degree of exposure to radiation. The Radiation Safety Department is located at 30 North Murray Street. Students should arrange to have badges sent to the laboratory in which they are working.

Conflict Resolution

If a problem develops between a student and their major professor, it is hoped that the student and major professor, through discussion, can resolve any differences. If the student or major professor is not satisfied with the results of this approach, then the problem should be presented to a member of the student’s Advisory Committee. At the same time, they must notify the Graduate Education Committee Chair of this action. In the event that the student does not yet have a committee, they should contact the Chair of the Graduate Education Committee or the CMP Graduate Education Office. The Chair will then attempt to resolve the problem to the mutual satisfaction of the student and major professor. The Chair will seek the guidance of the entire Graduate Education Committee (excluding the major professor in question) if necessary. Rapid action should be taken so as to resolve the problem as soon as possible.

Campus ID:

A student must present a photo ID to receive their student ID cards. The Campus ID card is issued at Union South in room B109.

Email/Net ID:

To establish an email account, visit www.wisc.edu and click on My UW, then on activate Net ID. Follow the instructions on the screen to register for an email account. If you have technical problems, please contact DOIT at 264-4357.

Bus Pass:

Once a student has obtained their campus ID, they can receive their bus pass. At the beginning of each semester, a representative from the Metro Bus System is available to scan Campus ID cards and issue bus passes at Union South. After the beginning of each semester, if a student has not picked up their bus pass, they can still obtain it from the ASM Room at the Memorial Union (by the games room).
