Rotations
An important decision that the student must make is the choice of a major professor. The decision process should begin at the time of application to the Cellular and Molecular Pathology Graduate Program. To help the student finalize his/her choice, a rotation through several laboratories during the first semester on campus is recommended. Students are encouraged to do three rotations approximately 4 weeks long. The student should contact the trainer directly in whose laboratory a rotation is desired. By the end of the first semester students are encouraged to select their major professor. A major professor is a trainer from the CMP Graduate Program responsible for supervising the student’s degree program, including their research. The major professor serves as chair of the student’s advising committee. The major professor/student relationship is one of mutual agreement, which may be terminated by either party.
Direct Admit Students
Students applying to the Cellular and Molecular Pathology graduate program can be directly admitted into a CMP trainer’s laboratory if that trainer agrees to serve as the student’s major professor. However, direct admit students still must meet the application requirements for the CMP program and be accepted by the Recruitment Committee. Direct admit students do not rotate and the major professor funds their appointment throughout their graduate study.
