Eduard Matkovic Awarded 2017 Sencer Scholarship

Congratulations to Eduard Matkovic, PGY3 Pathology Resident, who received a 2017 David J. Sencer Scholarship to attend the 2017 EIS Conference in Atlanta, GA in April. This nationally competitive scholarship is sponsored by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention Epidemic Intelligence Service (CDC EIS) to help support travel to the annual EIS Conference allowing recipients to learn more about the EIS program and to network with past and current EIS officers. The EIS Committee noted being impressed with Dr. Matkovic’s interest in public health, prior public health activities, and essay explaining his interest in the Epidemic Intelligence Service.

The CDC EIS has a more than 60-year history of successfully training ‘boots on the ground disease detectives.’ EIS officers support over 100 public health investigations each year in the U.S. and worldwide, such as the 2001 anthrax outbreak among US Postal Service workers or the 2014 Ebola outbreak. The EIS Conference is a primary forum for officers to present their epidemiologic activities. EIS officers are a diverse group comprised of physicians, veterinarians, scientists, and other health professionals who learn to apply epidemiology by solving public health problems through a two-year postdoctoral training and service fellowship.
